In the spring of 1860, the militia of Shinsengumi decamps in the Nishi-Honganji temple to look for new recruits, under the ever watchful eye of Captain Toshizo Hijikata and Commander Isami Kondo. Two men stand out from the rest; low-ranking samurai Hyoko Tashiro and a young man named Sozaburo Kano.
