In the spring of 1860, the militia of Shinsengumi decamps in the Nishi-Honganji temple to look for new recruits, under the ever watchful eye of Captain Toshizo Hijikata and Commander Isami Kondo. Two men stand out from the rest; low-ranking samurai Hyoko Tashiro and a young man named Sozaburo Kano. They have an immediate impact on the finely balanced order of the troops, especially when Hyozo falls madly in love with the secretly gay and bewitchingly beautiful Sozaburo.
