German scholar Doctor Faustus yearns to expand his knowledge and he turns to good friends Cornelius and Valdes to tutor him in the dark arts. Faustus summons Mephistopheles and asks the devil to return to the underworld with a proposition: if Mephistopheles will serve him for 24 years, the Doctor will relinquish his soul to Lucifer. Mephistopheles attempts to warn Faustus about the horrors of Hell but the scholar is unmoved and seals his grim fate.
