Donato is a strapping lifeguard, who patrols the sun-kissed sand of Futuro Beach in Fortaleza in northeastern Brazil. He tends to his ailing mother and is a role model for his younger brother Ayrton. During a rescue, Donato loses his grip on a drowning man in the crashing waves and the swimmer is sucked under. Donato is haunted by his first failed rescue and he unexpectedly seeks solace in the arms of the victim’s friend Konrad, who must return to Berlin after his vacation in Brazil.
