Theatre director and actor Yusuke is fully aware of his screenwriter wife's infidelities and tolerates these betrayals. Two years after his spouse Oto dies suddenly, Yusuke agrees to direct a bold new version of Uncle Vanya. The lead actor happens to be his wife's former lover. At the insistence of producers, Yusuke is chauffeured to and from the theatre by mild-mannered driver Misaki. Their odd couple friendship is a balm to Yusuke's troubled soul.
