Darwin's Nightmare
Genre: DocumentaryDirector: Hubert Sauper
Running Time: 107mins
Country: Aus/Fr/Bel
Year: 2004
Hubert Sauper’s wide-ranging documentary paints an unsettling portrait of the corrupting power of globalisation, beginning in the 1960s when the Nile Perch was introduced to Lake Victoria in Tanzania. The new breed rapidly wiped out all other fish and marine life. Today, these perch are a valuable commodity – but not to the villagers who fish the lake. Instead, hauls of the fish are exchanged for valuable weapons used in Africa’s many civil wars.
