In the wake of her divorce and a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband, single mother Yoshimi Matsubara moves into a low rent apartment block with her five-year-old daughter Ikuko. The flat is shabby to say the least and a damp patch quickly appears on the bedroom ceiling which begins to drip water. Soon after, Ikuko starts wandering off to play in neighbouring apartments and the increasingly unsettled Yoshimi catches glimpses of the ghost of a young girl.
