On June 12, 2000, the citizens of Rio de Janeiro were transfixed by a tragedy unfolding live on their television screens. A poor, homeless man named Sandro do Nascimento tried to rob the passengers aboard a number 174 bus to get money for food and shelter. The incident turned nasty and do Nascimento eventually took the entire bus hostage. Armed police surrounded the vehicle and television cameras swooped for the best vantage point to broadcast the siege as it unfolded.
