Eleven-year-old Maori Boy is being raised in 1980s Waihau Bay alongside his younger brother Rocky by an extended family led by his maternal grandmother. When he isn't trying to impress pretty classmate Chardonnay, Boy conjures fantastical tales about his estranged ex-convict father, Alamein, who has been absent from his life for many years. Shortly after Boy's grandmother has to leave to attend a funeral, Alamein returns to the family home, supposedly to rebuild bridges with his sons.
