Brit abroad Steven Spurrier owns an ailing wine shop in Paris, whose only customer is travel agent Maurice, owner of the busy and successful premises next door. Fearing his business is about to go under, Steven decides to organize a blind tasting competition between French and American wines and he makes a pilgrimage to the Napa Valley to sample the produce of this arid region, meeting grumpy perfectionist Jim Barrett and his son Bo, whose vineyard Chateau Montelena is on the brink of financial ruin. Jim does not believe one man can change the world and he rejects Steven’s offer to take two bottles of Montelena’s best wine to the competition. However, Bo intervenes, believing that the proof of his father’s genius is in the tasting.
