Born into a London-Irish family during the Second World War, John Healy spent much of the 1960s in the streets indulging in drink and petty crime, which eventually landed him in prison. Behind bars, he learnt to play chess and discovered a rare talent for the game, emerging from his incarceration to take the tournament chess circuit by storm. This documentary attempts to make sense of Healy’s rise from obscurity and subsequent fall, recounting a cautionary tale of fame and violent intoxication.
