Martine and her sister Philippa preside over a 19th century Christian ministry. The congregation is dwindling in numbers but the siblings remain devoted to the Lord. Babette Hersant turns up at their door unannounced, bearing a letter from Philippa's one time paramour, opera singer Achille Papin, who recommends Babette as a housekeeper. Martine and Philippa agree to employ Babette and she rewards the sisters with unstinting devotion.
