Construction worker Souleiman heads to Spain in an open boat to earn a decent living in Europe. The voyage ends in tragedy and women back in Dakar are consumed with grief. Seventeen-year-old Ada secretly mourns Souleiman. She was his lover but is betrothed to Omar, who harks from wealthy stock and will guarantee her a stable future.
