Before industrialisation, the Atlantic Ocean was an invaluable resource to Ireland, but in the intervening years, the country has viewed the water merely as a route for travel or the flow of workers. In sharp contrast, Canada and Norway have vociferously campaigned to retain control of their territorial waters and basins.
