Tulimaq is an elder in a small eskimo settlement of Igloolik near the Arctic Circle. He has two sons, Amaqjuaq the Strong One and Atanarjuat the Fast Runner, the latter of whom has won the heart of beautiful maiden Atuat. Oki, son of the chief Sauri, is incensed by Atuat's infatuation since he has been betrothed to her since childhood. In revenge, Oki plans to ambush and murder his rival, with help from his loutish friends.
