Franz Jagerstatter farms the land in the Austrian village of St Radegund with his wife Fani and formidable mother Rosalia to provide for their three girls. When the threat of conflict looms on the horizon in 1939, Franz trains alongside the other men in the village. He is eventually called to fight but steadfastly refuses to pledge an oath of loyalty to Adolf Hitler. This defiance risks death and creates deep divisions between Franz, Mayor Schlegel and his neighbours.
