The British actress – who is currently starring in a theatre production of Driving Miss Daisy in the West End – will receive the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences first European tribute to an actor, with Meryl Streep, Ralph Fiennes and her current stage partner James Earl Jones attending the event.

James will pay tribute to Vanessa, who has been nominated for six Academy Awards and won once for a role in 1977’s Julia, at the event, which is aimed at honouring her five decades in the film industry.

However, the honour does not include an actual Oscar statuette.

He will accept the prize on Vanessa’s behalf via video-link to the Governors Awards in Los Angeles, so as to not interrupt his run as chauffer Hoke in the London play.

Vanessa has appeared in more than 80 films throughout her prestigious career, and was recently praised for her performance of Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare movie Anonymous.
