The Transformers star – who stars alongside Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – regularly went to meetings with his father Jeffrey, who was addicted to alcohol and drugs.

He said: “I grew up around a lot of aggressive guys. My parents used to take me to AA meetings when I was very young. So I know aggression, I know insanity.”

LaBeouf also revealed the best time of his life was when he was selling hot dogs with his dad and mother Shayna, when they all dressed up as clowns.

The actor, who has previously confessed he endured a turbulent childhood, added to Arena magazine: “As soon as my parents donned those wigs, life was great. They had to show this jovial bulls**t side of themselves to sell the hot dogs, so we would act like the happiest family in the world. It was so peaceful and loving and happy and joyous and amazing.

“I enjoyed it even if it was fake. I didn’t know, I couldn’t tell the difference. Only now I see what it was all about. But when we got back to the house and took the stuff off, life was different again.”
