The 41-year-old singer – real name Robert Kelly – was accused of videotaping himself having sex with a girl aged 13 but was found not guilty on 14 counts on Friday.

Both the singer and his alleged victim – neither of whom testified in the case – denied being on the tape shown to the court, despite a string of prosecution witnesses claiming it was them.

Jurors cleared the I Believe I Can Fly singer after seven hours of deliberations after deciding there was no conclusive evidence to prove it was him on the tape and because of the alleged victim’s refusal to cooperate.

One juror told the Chicago Tribune newspaper: “You want to be 100 per cent sure it’s Kelly and the alleged victim. What we had wasn’t enough.”

A spokesperson for R. Kelly has revealed the singer is relieved to have been acquitted and is looking forward to moving on with his life.

The spokesperson said: “He knew when all the facts came out in court, he would be cleared of these terrible charges. All he wants to do is move forward and put it behind him.”

The singer is planning to release a new album next month.
