Prince Charles has been labelled “self-important” by his own charity official.

The future king was criticised in an email sent to several people by the representative of his architectural charity in Wales which discussed Leighton Andrews, the Welsh education minister.

Bob Croydon, who represents the Prince of Wales’s Foundation for the Built Environment, wrote: “The minister could doubtless give the Prince of Wales a good run for his money in the Self Importancy Sweepstakes.”

He goes on to criticise the decision to withdraw funding from the Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarships, managed at the University of Wales.

However, Bob claims the email has been misinterpreted, telling the Daily Telegraph: “My comments were directed at Leighton Andrews. He is self-important, the prince is important.”

A spokesman for the charity said of Bob’s email: “These comments are wholly inappropriate and do not reflect the views of the prince’s foundation. We have asked that the comments be withdrawn immediately and the incident is being investigated.”

A spokesman for Leighton Andrews responded by saying: “The minister believes that none of what Mr. Croydon said changes anything, nor addresses the serious governance issues surrounding the University of Wales.”
