ORLANDO BLOOM could join David Tennant in the The Hobbit, but both stars have to wait until 2012 before seeing themselves on the Middle Earth big screen as production of the movie has been put back.

Tennant has long been linked with the role of the young Bilbo Baggins, a view strengthened this week when it was revealed he had pulled out of graverobber drama Burke and Hare. He would take over the part from Ian Holm, who played the aged Bilbo in Lord of the Rings.

In Lord of the Rings, Bloom played Legolas the elf and has now admitted he has asked producer Peter Jackson for a role in The Hobbit.

“I shot an e-mail to Pete and I said, ‘You know, if you want me to don the blonde wig and pointy ears again, I’d be honored to do it,'” said Bloom.

One snag is that Legolas doesn’t appear in JRR Tolkein’s book The Hobbit, but Bloom apparently hopes he can be written into director Guillermo Del Toro’s version of the famous story.

Whatever the final cast, The Hobbit’s release has now been delayed until 2012 from its original date of 2011, due to behind the scenes financial goings-on.
