The Australian actor is contemplating accepting a part in a new stage adaptation of the 1954 movie A Star Is Born. Hugh won a Tony award after starring in stage show The Boy From Oz on New York’s Broadway from 2003 to 2004.

He reprised the role – for which he has been nominated for an Australian Dance Award – in Australia in 2006. The ceremony takes place on June 15 and Hugh is up for Outstanding Performance in a Stage Musical.

Hugh’s proposed role in A Star Is Born is an alcoholic movie star whose career begins to fail as his wife’s takes off.

The Boy From Oz was based on the life and loves of singer-songwriter Peter Allen, including his brief marriage to Liza Minnelli.

Minelli and her mother Judy Garland were lead characters in the play. Judy made her big screen comeback in the original movie of A Star Is Born, five years after being fired by MGM.
