The Oscar-winning star, who plays the Marxist revolutionist in new movie The Argentine, has revealed the beard he has cultivated for the role keeps getting him stopped by airport security.

Del Toro said: “It makes airports tougher. There’s a different line for the dangerous-looking characters.”

The Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas star – who allegedly had sex with Scarlett Johansson in a lift – also believes the beard is spoiling his chances with the ladies.

He added to Esquire: “Girls don’t check you out as much, and guys look down. But it’s funny, the looks I get from street people. Suddenly, I’m their brother.”

The Argentine is directed by Steve Soderbergh and according to Del Toro’s official website was originally going to be titled Guerrilla.

Shooting will take place across Spain for nine weeks, and the movie will be filmed entirely in Spanish.

The movie reunites Del Toro, 40, with Soderbergh for the first time since Traffic – for which Del Toro won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of a Mexican police officer.
