Rescheduled: Douglas Dare Brings Bittersweet Nostalgia To The Bookshelves

Live Music, Indie.

RESCHEDULED DUE TO COVID-19 Douglas Dare, an emerging British artist celebrated for his graceful honesty, will perform an all-ages matinee gig at Huddersfield Library, in collaboration with Get It Loud In Libraries. Growing up in rural Dorset, Douglas Dare often felt out of place and lost in his own world, dancing in his mother's pink ballet dress. Dare's music often explores these childhood experiences, as well as universal themes like loss and love. From a young boy who did not fit in, Dare now feels free to express his inner child again and, in doing so, has established himself as a 21st century singer-songwriter with a lyrical poise and minimalist sound. Regarded a "Herculean debut [album]" (The Line of Best Fit), Whelm (2014) introduced the artist as a phenomenal pianist and prompted comparisons with James Blake - though more intense. The dark intensity flowed into his 2016 follow up, Aforger. In between these two records, Dare came out to his father and ended a long-term relationship and his second album documents these life-altering experiences with a "crushingly sombre examination" (DIY). Latest album, 'Milkteeth' was released in 2019 and followed widespread recognition. In 2017, Dare contributed to Leonard Cohen's exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum of Montreal, currently showing at The Jewish Museum in New York. Dare was invited by Robert Smith to perform at his Meltdown Festival in 2018, followed by the David Lynch-curated Manchester International Festival alongside Anna Calvi in 2019. With acclaim from such established industry names, it is no wonder Dare now feels "confident and comfortable enough with his own identity to reflect on both the joys and pains of youth" (Erased Tapes). The album's bittersweet nostalgia has resonated with listeners and will give the audience at Huddersfield Library a lot to think about. Audiences across the UK are discovering libraries as unique venues that give people of all ages the chance to get close to emerging artists thanks to Get It Loud In Libraries, with past gigs including Adele, Florence + The Machine and Clean Bandit. Get It Loud In Libraries provides music provision to areas missed on major tours and exists to 'make libraries meaningful, useful and enjoyable for young people who hadn't visited in years, if at all' (Stewart Parsons). Douglas Dare's Huddersfield Library gig is a unique opportunity for people of all ages to see this emerging artist in an intimate venue that's on your doorstep.
