Beautiful ingenue Mabel is cast in the film of a notorious German director alongside seasoned actor Max and inexperienced co-stars, who have physical disabilities in real life. One of these actors, Rosenthal, who has neurofibromatosis, attempts to befriend Mabel in the hope that she can help him learn his lines. Initially, she cannot look Rosenthal in the eye.
