In his wayward youth, Frank Dux trains under Ninjutsu master Senzo Tanaka and learnt how to channel his strength alongside Senzo's son Shingo. Many years later, Frank honours his master's memory by taking Shingo's place in an underground martial arts tournament called the Kumite. In order to fight, Frank deserts his post as a captain in the US Army and is labelled a deserter.
