Ten-year-old Wadjda is streetwise and smart beyond her tender years. She sees a beautiful green bicycle in the local shop and becomes determined to raise enough money to buy it so that she can race her friend Abdullah. Such a race would be frowned upon in present day Riyadh but Wadjda is unperturbed. To raise the money, Wadjda decides to compete in her school’s Koran recital competition. Meanwhile, the school curtails the individual rights of its students but Wadjda refuses to kowtow.
