In September 1942, Soviet Captain Gromov leads a small troop of soldiers against the Germans, storming buildings one by one. Having secured one building, Gromov and four surviving soldiers discover a terrified 18-year-old woman called Katya. Her humanity touches the military men and they become her protectors. Meanwhile, German Captain Kahn prepares to launch his tanks and soldiers at the Soviet stronghold and reclaim the city.
