Pianist Wiktor Warski and his compatriot Irene Bielecka tour the snow-laden provinces of late 1940s Poland, auditioning young men and women to star in a state-sponsored show that will promote traditional song and dance. Zula is one of the fresh-faced hopefuls and her ambition clearly impresses Wiktor. They become secret lovers behind the back of government official Lech Kaczmarek. As the affair intensifies, Wiktor suggests to Zula that they should defect to East Germany.
