The actor will take on both roles in director Ridley Scott’s re-imagining of the classic tale. Scott – who has worked with Crowe on the Oscar-winning historical epic Gladiator – revealed the relationship between the two characters is integral to the film.

Scott said: “It’s a good old adjustment of characters. One becomes the other. It changes.”

Meanwhile, Crowe has revealed he will not be donning the iconic green tights worn by Robin Hood in previous big screen adaptations. He said: “We have done some research and tights hadn’t actually been invented.”

He added: “You shouldn’t do Robin Hood unless you do it really f***ing well.”

The Edge of Love star Sienna Miller is on board to play Maid Marion, saying it is the most “exciting role” she could have been offered.

The Dark Knight actor Christian Bale has previously been linked to the role of the kind-hearted thief, but could still play King Richard.

Production on the film was delayed after problems with the script and the forest location not being green enough forced movie bosses to hold off.
