Survey of the early 20th century in Sweden which unfolds through the eyes of a long-suffering wife and mother, who struggles to keep her family together in the face of physical abuse and crippling financial pressures. Maria Larsson is burdened with an alcoholic husband, Sigfrid, who occasionally unleashes his foul temper with his fists on her or one of the children. While the old man is sleeping off his hangover, Maria celebrates winning a camera in a lottery and seeks out local photographer Sebastian Pedersen aka Piff Paff Puff, who persuades her to keep the item and re-examine the world through the lens. As the bond between Maria and Piff Paff Puff strengthens, violence threatens to tear the family apart for good.
