Based on the traditional German model of rows of themed stalls, the Hyde Park version has the bonus of extra attractions in the shape of London’s biggest ice-rink, the 50m big wheel and plenty of other fun-fair style attractions.

Visitors to last year’s Winter Wonderland liked “the atmosphere, quality and variety of goods, surrounding attractions and ease of access,” according to Chistmasmarkets.com.

Cologne’s famous Christmas Market came second in the survey, with Leeds’ Christkindelmarkt in third.

It’s true that the readership of the website is mainly British, but even then, Hyde Park can pat itself on the back for beating its northern rival, as well as the events in Bath, Birmingham and Canterbury, which were ranked fourth, sixth and eighth respectively.

Winter Wonderland opens this Saturday, 21 November and runs through until 3 January 2010.
