The Monument's 311 Steps Re-open

Refurbishment complete at Wren's Great Fire of London memorial

The Monument's 311 Steps Reopen

THE MONUMENT re-opens today at noon following an extensive eighteen month refurbishment.

The 61 metre (202 feet) tower, completed in 1677, was designed by Sir Christopher Wren to commemorate The Great Fire of London of 2nd to 4th of September 1666. Built of Portland stone, the column houses 311 steps which lead to an observation area just below the gilded orb pinnacle.

The height of The Monument replicates the exact distance from it's base to the site of the start of The Great Fire; a bakery in Pudding Lane.

Visitors who scale The Monument earn a certificate to verify their vertical accomplishment on returning to ground level.
