DAME Helen Mirren and Russell Crowe were bowled over by the balmy weather on Leicester Square last night for the world premiere of political thriller State of Play.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been to a sunny premiere in London,” said Crowe, who plays an investigative journalist to Mirren’s editor.

“I’ve been to a couple where I wore an overcoat and a scarf, so this is a brand new experience.”

Mirren’s part has something of the Jane Tennison from Prime Suspect about it, but she put the hard-nosed act away in yesterday’s sun, positively beaming about her co-star.

“I loved him, he’s a wonderful actor to work with,” said Mirren.

“I think the best thing was to be able to watch him work and learn form his work.”

The film’s director, Kevin McDonald, pointed to one reason Mirren might have enjoyed it all so much.

“She is brilliant when she’s giving Russell a telling off,” he said.

In State of Play, the journo pair are on the trail of a story involving Ben Affleck’s Congressman, who admits having had an affair with his murdered assistant.
