The Top Gear star will present Secret Service, a six-part BBC One Saturday night show, which will see Hammond and fellow conspirators carry out missions given to them by viewers.

Producers of the series said: “Whether you want to propose, impress or get back at your best mate – they’ll complete your mission in the most absurd, ridiculous way they can.”

The news comes just weeks after it was announced Hammond’s other show, Total Wipeout, was to be axed after the next series.

A BBC spokeswoman said: “After four very successful series of Total Wipeout, and one series of Winter Wipeout, the BBC has taken the decision that the next series will be the last.”

The game show sees contestants tackle a number of wacky obstacle course challenges and often attracts more than 4.5million viewers.

After the news, fans took to twitter to vent their anger about it being axed.

One wrote: “NOOOOO can’t believe Total Wipeout has been axed!! what are the BBC thinking?!?!? #theyobviouslyarentthinking. (sic)”
