“The Prime Minister has indeed sent him a message,” said a spokesperson for Brown.

“He emphasised what a tremendous ambassador Mr Beckham is for English soccer and wishes him well in his recovery, as I think the whole nation does.”

“It meant a lot receiving it,” a source close to Beckham told Sky Sports.

Beckham injured his Achilles tendon playing for his club side, Milan, on the weekend. Though his doctor, Professor Sakari Orava, says he will recover, England’s most capped footballer is sure to miss this summer’s World Cup.

“Healing takes a long time,” said Orava.

On the plus side, Beckham has been invited to accompany the England squad at the finals in South Africa, though his services as a TV pundit are the subject of a mega-money battle between the BBC, ITV and ESPN.
