American Jewish family man David Kaplan travels to Poland with his cousin Benji so they can visit the childhood home of their late grandmother. The pair join a guided tour led by Brit abroad James, joining a small group comprising Marcia, couple Diane and Mark, and Rwandan genocide survivor Eloge. As the tour moves through Poland, David and Benji’s relationship becomes visibly strained.

Elwood Curtis is wrongly accused of stealing a car and he is sent to Nickel Academy to recalibrate his outlook on life. Behind closed doors, Elwood and other residents suffer humiliation at the hands of educators including brutal corporal punishment. Elwood forms a close friendship with a boy named Jack Turner and they draw strength from each other to survive the intimidation and violence meted out by corrupt administrators.

The patriarch of the Parondi family dies and his widow Rosaria travels from Lucania to Milan with the rest of the clan to stay with eldest son Vincenzo. The well-to-do family of Vincenzo’s fiancee Ginetta rejects unsophisticated southerners in their city so Rosaria and her other children Rocco, Ciro, Luca and Simone are cruelly consigned to a basement. Vincenzo marries Ginetta and raises a family but he has little contact with his mother or siblings.
