The 82-year-old monarch, dressed in a pink skirt and jacket, and her spouse spent the afternoon in the royal balcony at the Epsom racecourse in Surrey.

While there, they witnessed the world-famous race, The Derby, which is arguably the most prestigious flat horse race in the world.

5-1 shot New Approach – a two-year-old Irish colt, ridden by Kevin Manning – won the race and the royal couple were seen applauding afterwards.

The horse was given to owner Princess Haya of Jordan by her husband, the ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum.

New Approach’s entrance courted controversy after trainer Jim Bolger had said in April the horse wouldn’t compete in the 1.5-mile Derby, before deciding to enter it last week.

The Derby was first held in 1779 when Edward Smith Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby, organised a competition for himself and his friends.
