The fourth plinth at the famous landmark is currently a platform for many contemporary artists to exhibit their work, but senior officials have suggested a statue of the queen riding on her favourite horse, Burmese, will be commissioned when she passes away.

A source from London City Hall told The Independent: “The plinth is wide enough and perfectly shaped for Her Majesty on horseback.”

The revelation comes after Mayor of London Boris Johnson amazed officials by retracting his plan to erect a permanent statue on the plinth, prompting much speculation about the reason for his change of heart.

In May this year, Johnson withdrew comments supporting plans to build a statue of Battle of Britain hero Sir Keith Park.

At the time, he said: “The fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square would be a wonderful spot, but it appears complex planning issues would make it difficult to secure this location on an ongoing basis.”

The chairman of the Planning Briefs Committee on Westminster council, Alastair Moss, did not comment on the plans for the statue.

He said: “At present no planning applications have been submitted to us by the Mayor’s office regarding the fourth plinth.”
