Mr Scruff at London Koko
Popular on LondonNet
A lot of things have happened since a young Andy Carthy started answering to the name Mr Scruff – making a name for himself under the shadow Manchester’s mid 90s club scene. Not only has he released three critically acclaimed albums, including 1999’s monstrous Keep It Unreal and 2002’s Trouser Jazz, but with countless tours and club events he has cemented his ‘legendary’ DJ status (an accolade thrust upon our self depreciating hero by his adoring public, rather than media based analysts). This is a DJ that can sell out the 1600 capacity London Forum armed only with his records, some turntables and a few spare packets of teabags.
Andy Carthy’s transformation from humble supermarket shelf stacker to world-beating DJ and gold-selling artist Mr Scruff is well and truly complete. Since his first vinyl excursion he has recorded for over 25 labels including Warp, Sirkus, Disorient, Blood &l Fire, Cup Of Tea, Grand Central and, of course, Ninja Tune. Mr Scruff’s Keep It Unreal nights cover a large range of genres and moods, all tied together with his sheer love of great music as well as supreme but unflashy DJ skills, and form an opportunity for the public to completely enter the Scruff world. A team of diligent professionals arrives early in the day to spend hours getting a venue ready with projectors, screens, Scruff’s own equipment, the merch stall, and of course tweaking with the PA system to get the sound as perfect as possible!
