KEN LIVINGSTONE has announced a fare freeze on the vast majority of public transport from next year.

“Single Tube, bus, DLR and tram fares will be frozen from January 2008, as we look to share the city’s economic success with our passengers,” said London’s Mayor.

Also frozen are the One Day and weekly bus passes.

One day Travelcards and Travelcard Season Tickets are to rise with inflation. Transport for London says this is because they are linked with the National Rail services and therefore not under the exclusive control of TfL.

The news of a fare-freeze was greeted with some scepticism by rival politicians who point out that next year Livingstone faces re-election.

“We already have a very expensive public transport system here,” said Roger Evans, a Tory member of the London Assembly.

Livingstone counters that in real terms, adjusted for inflation, bus fares have gone down by nine per cent and that Tube fares have increased by only 0.4 per cent a year.
