The RAC says that 20 million vehicles will hit the roads over the next few days, usually the busiest of the year, and its rival, the AA, reckons there will be some 50,000 breakdowns.

On the plus side, the rain puts off plenty of people – as many as a third say traffic experts – from making journeys and there are fewer roadwork-delays than last year. More on snarl-ups at the Highway Agency site.

Train travellers can also take a positive approach, with the news that a proposed rail strike has now been called off

Meanwhile, airports will be at peak business, with around two million people set to head abroad this Easter, compared with 1.5 million just three years ago.

Lucky stay-at-home Londoners will benefit from quieter than normal streets and the long list of Easter events on offer, many of them to be found on our special Easter pages .
