LONDON police have now charged over 1,000 people with crimes linked to last week’s riots and plan to charge at least another 2,000 before they’re done.

“Officers across the Met are carrying out great police work, day and night, to gather the kind of evidence which has led to these charges,” said acting Metropolitan Police chief Tim Godwin.
Up until today, the Met had made over 1,700 arrests and charged 1,005 people. The rest of the near 700 suspects are still being processed.
Not that passing the 1,000 milestone is enough for Godwin, one of the favourites to get the top job at the Met on a permanent basis. Earlier, he set a target of getting 3,000 alleged rioters in the dock.
“Our tireless investigations to find those responsible for last week’s appalling violence continue,” he said.
London Mayor Boris Johnson was quick to praise the Met for their arrest rate.
“To have already charged 1,000 people is a testament not only to their dedication, but also to the outstanding support they have had from law-abiding Londoners who will not tolerate this behaviour in their communities,” he said.
