THE STORY OF LONDON, a Mayor-backed series of special events on a London theme, is back for its second year from 1 October and some of the headline participants have been announced today.

Confirmed names include Billy Bragg (singer), John Hegley (poet), Sir Terry Farrell (architect), Daisy Goodwin (author) and Adam Hart Davies (science/history broadcaster).
The theme this time around is London’s tradition of inventiveness and how it can be harnessed for the future. Subjects covered in talks, films, music events and debates include bankers bonuses, the 2012 Olympics, future fashion and Dagenham Dock.
“The Story of London is about invention, ideas and exploring the city,” said Mayor Boris Johnson.
“Who knows, you too might be inspired to instigate the next big thing.”
Unfortunately, the next big thing might not include the Story of London itself, if the size of this year’s instalment is any guide.
“Last year’s event was, apparently, such a runaway success that the number of events has been reduced from 500-odd to, er, 100-odd,” notes Helen at boriswatch.co.uk.
