KENSINGTON is the most expensive place in Britain for houses, with the average property in the west London area’s postcode, W8, costing a whopping £1.5M.

As well as being the most expensive area, W8 also has the priciest residential road. Kensington Palace Gardens boasts an average house price of £18M. This street of gold is where you’ll find the home of Britain’s richest man, metal magnate Lakshmi Mittal.

In all, London has five postcode areas with average prices of more than £1M, says property website Zoopla.

Knightsbridge (SW7) and Chelsea (SW3) both average out at £1.3M, David Cameron’s Notting Hill (W11) hits the £1.2m mark and West Brompton (SW10) is right on the button at £1m.

On the street level, London has nearly 1,500 roads with an average house price of at least £1M, three-quarters of the total for the whole of the country.

Despite the recession, London’s prime property prices have shot up by 9% since this time last year.

“The past 12 months has seen house prices in the leading areas of the country rebound at a far faster rate than the average, contributing to a widening of the north/south divide,” said Nick Leming of Zoopla.
