CABLE CARS could be crossing the Thames in time for the London Olympics in 2012 if an ambitious scheme gets the go-ahead.

Designed to link the O2 in Greenwich with the ExCel Centre just over the water, the cable cars could ferry 2,500 people an hour between Olympic sites in an area low on traditional river crossings.

Though a privately-funded initiative, the project has important backing in the form of Transport for London and London Mayor Boris Johnson, who said:

“Passengers would be able to drink in the truly spectacular views of the Olympic Park and iconic London landmarks whilst shaving valuable minutes from their travelling time.”

A cable car system is favoured because it would be quick and relatively cheap – at £25M – to put up, compared to a new bridge or tunnel.
