BORIS JOHNSON is back on his bike today, announcing that the first two of London’s Cycle Superhighways will launch on 19 July.

One of them is a link between Merton and the City, the other from Barking to Tower Gateway. If you wondered what those funny blue lanes were, that have popped up in these areas, now you know.

The schemes are part of the London Mayor’s programme to further boost cycling, which has already increased in the capital by 14% since Johnson’s election in 2008.

“With the launch this summer of the London Cycle Hire scheme, Cycle Superhighways and a fit-to-burst schedule of cycling events, there has never been a better time to give pedal power a punt,” said Johnson.

Ten more Cycle Superhighways are on the drawing board. The next two, expected to be up and running by 2012, are between Ilford and Aldgate and from Wandsworth Town to Westminster.
