On the South Bank of the River Thames lies the Waterloo area, home to London’s largest mainline train terminus – Waterloo Station – and modern London’s most famous icon: The London Eye.
The area is named after the original Waterloo bridge that opened in 1817 which itself was named after the Battle of Waterloo, where the English forces and their allies led by the Duke of Wellington beat Napoleon’s French army outside Brussels in 1815. In one of those twists of fate beloved of history, Waterloo Station was the original London terminus for the Eurostar with services operating until 2007 between the capital and Paris, France and Brussels in Belgium before the route switched to St Pancras.
Nowadays the Waterloo area is a great place to stay with a wealth of cultural attractions nearby from key tourist spots including The London Eye, London Dungeonand Sealife London Aquarium and art havens including the South Bank Centre, Royal Festival Hall, BFI Southbank and Imax and Tate Modern. Many Londoners believe the view of their city from either side of Waterloo Bridge is the capital’s finest, particularly during a ‘Waterloo Sunset’ as made famous by the classic 1960s Kinks song.
