Struggling actress Madeleine Verdier is desperate to jumpstart her career and she visits the home of celebrated theatre producer Montferrand to secure a part. She survives an attempted physical assault and relates the grimy details to her roommate, aspiring lawyer Pauline Mauleon. Soon after, Montferrand is found dead and Madeleine is accused of his murder, supposedly in a fit of anger. Pauline argues to the magistrate that her gal pal acted in self-defence.
