Francis and his good friend Alan visit a carnival, where they become transfixed by the hypnotist Dr Caligari, who exerts control over the somnambulist Cesare - a soothsayer with the power to predict the future. Alan is keen to learn his fate so he asks Cesare to foretell his destiny and the somnambulist claims that Alan will be dead by the following morning. Sure enough, Alan is slain and Francis and Jane investigate, determined to prove that Dr Caligari and his puppet are responsible.
