Iona is trapped in a volatile and destructive relationship until her teenage son Billy intercedes. Mother and son flee to the island of her birth where her return dredges up painful memories for some of the locals, notably her one-time best friend Elisabeth and old flame Daniel. In this insular community, Iona hopes to find a new sense of purpose and serenity but Billy’s blossoming romance with Elisabeth’s paraplegic daughter Sarah creates tension and unease.
